Stipley’s Barbershop
Film Proposal
May 2021 | Aidan Hennebry
The Project
Hamilton isn’t short on barber shops, but it is short on shops with soul and a respect for the heritage of the craft. The goal of this project is to emerge with a 3 to 5 minute micro documentary that showcases the events that led up to co-founder Joel Cumby’s establishment of Stipley’s Barber Shop, and what this new shop means for the community.
The Execution
Over the course of a few days, Aidan will capture shots of: the city of Hamilton, the Stipley neighbourhood, Joel barbering, establishing the shop, and any other relevant details for the film. Additionally, Aidan and Joel will sit down for about 30 minutes to chat about what led up to the establishment of the shop and what the hope is as it opens.
The Script
We would stay away from a formal script written in pre-production, and instead opt to form the foundation of the film through soundbites in an interview. We set the cameras up, start rolling, and just have a conversation. Real + raw.
The Feel
We want the end result to have the stunning visuals of a feature length film, but the accessibility of a home movie. We want to mix handheld and candid shots with dramatic lighting and interesting compositions. At times a little grainy; at times a little shaky. But always full of heart. Always human.

The Message
The film would seek not only to be an indirect promotion for Stipley’s Barbershop, but would seek to communicate hope in dark times; triumph over unfavourable odds. As we all begin to emerge from under the shadow of the Coronavirus, so we want to communicate that others may flourish in the same way the barbershop will.
The Timeline
Ideally, we would start filming in mid-May to have a finished film released by mid-June. Sooner is better for all of us, and I’m a guy who likes to strike while the iron is hot.
The
Budget
This micro-documentary and all other deliverables (including a possible handful of still photos) will be completely free of charge. Traditionally, a project of this scope would cost between $3000 and $5000.
Ready?
As you can hopefully tell, I’m already really excited about this project, and hoping it piques your interest. If you’re ready to start talking about making this vision a reality, let me know!
